Forward Deployed Engineer
Multiple Positions

We’re hiring multiple Forward Deployed Engineers to be the technical face of Countera at client sites across the Bay Area. You’ll live where the product meets reality: grocery aisles, checkout lanes, back offices, and stockrooms. Deploy the platform on-site, configure it per retailer, get store teams running, and feed learnings back into product. This is for engineers who want to see their work used by real people within hours — not shipped into a backlog.

What You’ll Do

  • Deploy and configure the Countera platform (POS, payments, inventory, back office) at client sites across the Bay Area
  • Set up and troubleshoot lane hardware: registers, scanners, scales, receipt printers, payment terminals, and customer-facing displays
  • Migrate client data — catalogs, price books, inventory — into Countera and validate it end to end
  • Train cashiers, store managers, and back-office staff; make sure they’re fast and confident on day one
  • Debug issues live on-site, triage what you can’t fix, and drive resolution with the core engineering team
  • Run UAT scripts and go-live checklists with clients; own the deployment through stabilization
  • Be the voice of the customer: turn on-the-ground friction into concrete product feedback, bug reports, and feature specs

What We’re Looking For

  • 0–3 years of experience in software engineering, solutions engineering, technical support, or IT deployment (internships and strong projects count)
  • Degree in CS/Engineering or equivalent hands-on skills
  • Comfort with at least one scripting/programming language (Python, JavaScript, or similar) and basic SQL
  • Familiarity with APIs, networking basics, and debugging across hardware and software
  • Strong communicator — you can explain technical things to non-technical retail staff with patience and clarity
  • Self-starter who stays calm when a checkout lane is down and a line is forming
  • Willingness to travel to client sites across the Bay Area, including occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekends around go-lives
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to work on-site in the US

Nice to Have

  • Experience with POS systems, payments, or retail/restaurant tech (Revel, Square, Toast, Lightspeed, NCR, etc.)
  • Exposure to hardware integrations (scales, scanners, printers, payment terminals)
  • Experience in retail, grocery, or hospitality — even behind a counter

Senior Software Development Engineer (SDE III)
Technical Leadership · Hands-On

As an SDE III at Countera, you will be a technical leader responsible for designing, building, and operating the large-scale enterprise systems that power modern retail commerce. You will own architecture, drive technical strategy, lead complex engineering initiatives, and mentor other engineers — while remaining deeply hands-on.

The Role

This role is for someone who enjoys hard engineering problems: highly scalable distributed systems, demanding reliability targets, and enterprise customers who depend on your software every day. You will collaborate closely with product, AI, forward-deployment, and customer teams to turn ambitious ideas into production-ready platforms.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the design and development of large-scale, cloud-native software systems
  • Architect scalable, resilient, highly available distributed services
  • Drive technical direction across multiple engineering initiatives
  • Own projects from architecture through deployment and long-term operational excellence
  • Build highly performant APIs, backend services, and event-driven systems
  • Work with AI engineers to integrate LLM-powered workflows, intelligent agents, and knowledge-based systems into enterprise applications
  • Review architecture and code; uphold engineering excellence and maintainability
  • Mentor engineers through technical guidance, design reviews, and best practices
  • Partner with product and forward-deployment teams to translate business challenges into scalable technical solutions
  • Continuously improve engineering standards, tooling, developer productivity, and platform reliability

Technical Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building production-grade systems
  • Strong CS fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, operating systems, networking, and distributed systems
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing complex software architectures
  • Strong proficiency in Java and Python; deep experience with Spring Boot and modern backend frameworks
  • Expertise in PostgreSQL and SQL optimization
  • Deep understanding of AWS services and cloud-native application architecture
  • Extensive experience with Docker, containers, and microservices
  • Experience designing secure, scalable REST APIs and event-driven architectures
  • Experience with observability, monitoring, logging, CI/CD, and production operations
  • Highly desirable: AI-native application development — Amazon Bedrock, Knowledge Bases, Model Context Protocol (MCP), agent-to-agent communication, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and LLM integration

  • Drive architectural discussions and influence technical direction across teams
  • Balance short-term execution with long-term platform scalability
  • Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar across the organization
